The Mimic Octopus is clever, but is it really the most intelligent animal on planet earth? The world is full of intelligent dogs & animals! Here are the Mimic Octopus facts so you can decide for yourself.
It was Steven Overcash in New York who posted the Epic Wildlife Facebook suggesting the Mimic Octopus for the 50 strangest animal series which was only recently discovered in the early 1,990's. Scientific Name - Thaumoctopus mimicus
While most octopus are known for their ability to change their shape and color to blend into their various surroundings, the Mimic Octopus, has a unique ability that makes it extremely special. It's able to shape shift it's body into different forms of sea life as well as take on their actions and animal behaviors. Now that's an Intelligent creature!
Here are 5 sea creatures that it has been filmed impersonating.
-- The poisonous flat fish while moving around the ocean floor
-- The Lion Fish, which is a highly venomous creature that potential predators will avoid.
-- A jellyfish, the octopus will mimic it's actions by puffing it's head & slowly sinking to the bottom with it's arms spread evenly around it's body.
-- Sea snake, which is pretty amazing, as it buries itself in a hole and connecting two tentacles together making it look like one long snake with a head on one side and a thin tail on the other. The Belcher's Sea Snake is the most venomous snake in the world!
Scientist have confirmed the Mimic to be able to impersonate at least 15 different actual sea life species as well as some really strange ones that haven't been identified.
So far they have been known to mimic sea snakes, lionfish, flatfish, brittle stars, sea shells, giant crabs, stingrays, jellyfish, flounders, sea anemones and mantis shrimp among others.
